PROFESSIONAL PROJECT

IAAS - Automated Oracle Database & Cluster Provisioning

Infrastructure Engineer · La Banque Postale

Jun 2020 — Dec 2020

Overview

As an Infrastructure Automation Engineer at La Banque Postale, I designed and implemented an end-to-end automated provisioning solution for Oracle databases and high-availability clusters running on IBM AIX Logical Partitions (LPARs).

Building on an existing AIX server provisioning framework that I had previously developed, I extended the automation to support three Oracle deployment architectures:

  • Standalone Oracle databases
  • Oracle Data Guard active-passive configurations
  • Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), supporting active-active clusters of up to 12 nodes

The solution automated infrastructure provisioning, parallel server deployment, private network configuration, cluster initialization, and Oracle installation workflows.

By introducing standardized resource templates and predefined cluster configurations, we transformed a complex infrastructure delivery process into a self-service offering.

About the project

Project Context - Extending AIX Automation to Oracle Database Infrastructure

At La Banque Postale, provisioning Oracle database servers was traditionally a complex process involving multiple infrastructure teams.

Deploying a database cluster required coordinating AIX server creation, capacity planning, network configuration, storage allocation, and Oracle database installation. Depending on the architecture, several servers needed to be provisioned and configured consistently before the database team could initialize the cluster.

I had previously developed an automated AIX LPAR provisioning solution, so we decided to build on that foundation to provide a complete Oracle database hosting service.

We introduced predefined infrastructure templates allowing users to request standalone databases or high-availability clusters without having to coordinate each technical component individually.

Automating Oracle Database Architectures

I developed the orchestration workflows supporting three deployment models.

  • Standalone Oracle Databases

The automation provisions an AIX LPAR with the required CPU, memory, storage, and network configuration before executing Oracle installation and database creation scripts.

  • Oracle Data Guard

For active-passive configurations, the workflow provisions the required servers and executes the database team's scripts to establish the primary and standby database environments.

  • Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC)

RAC presented a greater technical challenge because multiple active database instances needed to communicate efficiently over a dedicated private network.

I automated the infrastructure deployment of RAC clusters containing up to 12 nodes, including parallel LPAR provisioning and cluster-wide configuration.

Automating Private Network Provisioning for Oracle RAC

One of the most challenging parts was automating the private interconnect required between Oracle RAC nodes. Previously, network configuration required manual intervention from the Network team. I collaborated with network engineers to understand their infrastructure and obtain the necessary API permissions.

I then developed the integration required to:

  1. Create the dedicated private VLAN for the cluster.
  2. Reserve the necessary IP addresses.
  3. Create and configure network interfaces.
  4. Assign the appropriate private IP addresses to each RAC node.
  5. Ensure consistent network configuration across the cluster.

This eliminated manual coordination for one of the most complex parts of RAC infrastructure provisioning.

Parallel Provisioning and Cluster Orchestration

To optimize deployment time, I designed the automation to provision multiple AIX LPARs in parallel. Once the individual nodes were ready, a parent cluster orchestration workflow executed the required post-configuration steps to synchronize the infrastructure and prepare it for Oracle initialization.

I also integrated the Oracle installation and database creation scripts provided by the DBA team. My responsibility was to orchestrate their execution, manage dependencies between infrastructure components, and ensure that the different steps were performed in the correct order.

This separation allowed database specialists to maintain their Oracle configurations while the automation framework handled infrastructure provisioning and execution.

Standardizing Complex Infrastructure Requests

Before automation, each cluster deployment required several discussions involving application owners, capacity planning, infrastructure engineers, and database specialists.

Teams needed to validate resource requirements and agree on the appropriate architecture before deployment could begin. We simplified this process by introducing predefined cluster models and resource templates.

Instead of designing every cluster individually, users could select a standardized configuration adapted to their needs. This reduced repeated technical discussions and made sophisticated Oracle infrastructure accessible through a much simpler provisioning workflow.

My contribution

  • End-to-End Infrastructure Orchestration: Designed and implemented automated workflows supporting standalone Oracle databases, Data Guard configurations, and RAC clusters with up to 12 nodes using Microfocus Suite (OO/CSA) and Ansible.
  • Network Automation: Collaborated with the Network team and developed API integrations to automate VLAN creation, private IP allocation, and network interface configuration for Oracle RAC clusters.
  • Parallel Execution & Cluster Coordination: Implemented parallel AIX LPAR provisioning and parent-level orchestration to synchronize cluster nodes and execute post-configuration tasks.
  • Cross-Team Integration & Standardization: Integrated Oracle installation scripts provided by the DBA team and worked with infrastructure specialists to introduce reusable resource templates and standardized deployment configurations.

Outcomes

  • Reduced Oracle cluster provisioning from several weeks to less than one hour: Automated infrastructure deployment, network configuration, and database initialization, significantly reducing delivery time.
  • Automated high-availability clusters of up to 12 nodes: Supported standalone databases, Oracle Data Guard, and Oracle RAC through a single standardized provisioning framework.
  • Eliminated repeated infrastructure design discussions for standard configurations: Introduced predefined resource and cluster templates, allowing users to request complex Oracle environments without coordinating every technical requirement individually.
